The most important search engine optimization strategy to look at is selecting keywords. There are a few steps you will need to go through in order to properly select these keywords. Use these in sequence, and when you are done you will have completed a very useful SEO checklist that you can put into action.
First off you must brainstorm for keywords write out as many as you can. Most people can make a short or long list of keywords easily. You would want to use keywords from your competitor’s sites in this list as well.
To further select the most relevant keywords that you are expecting web surfers to use to locate sites like yours research on Google for these ones. By using a query like “what keywords are associated with x business?” for example will more than likely answer this question for you.
If you install the Google toolbar you can see what your competitor’s page rankings are.
The next step is to create a list of the top site URLs that return from each of these searches then visit them. The page rank number represents their current real time ranking position, 1 is first, 3 is third, etc… These rankings are used to identify how relevant a site is compared to other sites of the same scope of business.
Next go on to enter your major keywords into other searches and then compare these. You will find that the higher the page rank a site has the more times it will show up in the results from the other synonymous keyword searches you perform. You will find that in the web sized audience of billions of web pages, your competition will generally rank well in several search engines also. So you may want to use some of the other search engines in your research process. True high rankings are achieved by having a first page ranking in most of these search engines for multiple keywords not just one or two.
